Description
Mac Thorneâs time as a Changeling is coming to an end.
It may have taken eighteen years, but Mac did finally manage to do what the Council wanted: she chose a teacher and renounced the in-between.
Thereâs just one last step. She must say goodbye to her human. Forever.
After being challenged in every way possible, Mac leaves what she thought would be the easiest task for the last possible moment. As midnight on July fourth draws near, though, she hasnât found a way to give up Winn Thomas.
Nor does she want to.
With time running out, Mac stands at a literal crossroads.
Choose Winn, and sheâll be stripped of the only family sheâs ever knownâvampires, dragons, and her favorite demon. Even her own mother. Accept her position on the Council and rule as an equal to her twelve peers, and sheâll forget Winn ever existed.
Independence and freedom have never before been so limiting.
In this final chapter of the 19th Year Trilogy, itâs time for Mac to decide.
Responsibility? Or Love?

Chapter 1
Mac
âIf you touch him, I will kill you.â I meant it, too, and forced myself not to crumble the orange juice cup Iâd been sent out to get.
Ridge, standing in front of Winnâs hospital bed, raised his hands. âWhoa, what gives, Mackenzie?â
I stepped farther into Winnâs private room, the door closing behind me. âGet away from Winn.â
Ridge backed up toward the far wall, across from where Winn had lay for the previous twelve hours. âSeriously, girl, whatâs going on?â
âWhy donât you tell me?â
He shook his short blond hair, hands still in the air, blue eyes boring into mine. âI donât know what youâre talking about.â His gaze shifted to Winn, but I didnât follow.
I kept my eyes focused on Ridge, expecting that, if I even glanced at Winn, Ridge would attack or poof his way to obliv- ion. No one had given me any answers on what magic he could do since the last unexpected event at our party months before. Not to mention, I didnât understand why Ridge would want or need to visit Winn. âWhat are you doing here?â
âVisiting a friend.â He pointed toward where Winn slept. âI donât believe you. Spill it, baseball boy, or Iâll make you.â Ridge huffed a laugh. âLike you could.â One hand started down.
âGet it back up, or I call security, and I donât mean the police.â
Ridge cocked his head in my direction. âWho else would you call?â
For a moment, I wondered if he didnât understand, or if heâd started a game of chicken and egg and just waited for one of us to spill our magical secrets to the other.
âCâmon, Mackenzie. I came to see how Winn was. I heard he was in a car accident and today was the first day we could visit.â
âAt six a.m.?â I snorted. âRight, and Iâm a monkeyâs uncle.â
âWouldnât . . .â The sound came from Winn, still in bed and barely awake, but I forced myself to keep my eyes trained in Ridgeâs direction. â. . . that be . . .â
The desire to turn, to check on Winn had me clenching my hands and tightening my muscles.
â. . . a monkeyâs aunt?â
He would try to make a joke.
I let my gaze travel to him and found his big brown eyes blinking at me. Even just ten minutes before, heâd barely been able to open them.
Winn. I loveâ
His eyes darted to the left.
I spun back to Ridge, and as his lips moved in a near-silent cadence, the room burst into light and wind that couldnât exist blew through my hair.
âSpirit guides, I ask you, lend me focus and clarity.â Ridgeâs voice held a mystical qualityâalmost feminine.
No! Thatâs the spell to go to the in-between. âMayday, Suze!â
If he finishes, and sends Winn in, Winnâll die. Â Â
