About the front:
Talk about elaborate. That’s what caught my eye. Well, that and the red. Red on silver. What does that mean? Blood and metal? Pain and jail? There are so many possibilities with this which is yet another thing that makes me take a second look. It’s intense from a cover perspective, it’s almost busy — too busy in fact— but again, that makes me want to look again instead of turning away. The girl is attached to the bench and she herself looks half-dead… though her eyes are open. The silver is replicate in the red for a little bit until we get to the sky giving his an even more ominous feel. It’s creepy … it’s weird … it’s got my attention.

Now let’s look at what the back says:

Everything is made of steel, even the flowers. How can you love anything in a place like this?

Daphne is the half-demon, half-fallen angel daughter of Lucifer and Lilith. Life for her is an endless expanse of time, until her brother Obie is kidnapped – and Daphne realizes she may be partially responsible. Determined to find him, Daphne travels from her home in Pandemonium to the vast streets of Earth, where everything is colder and more terrifying. With the help of the human boy she believes was the last person to see her brother alive, Daphne glimpses into his dreams, discovering clues to Obie’s whereabouts. As she delves deeper into her demonic powers, she must navigate the jealousies and alliances of the violent archangels who stand in her way. But she also discovers, unexpectedly, what it means to love and be human in a world where human is the hardest thing to be.

This second novel by rising star Brenna Yovanoff is a story of identity, discovery, and a troubled love between two people struggling to find their place both in our world and theirs.

Does it match? Front to Back without the in between?

Everything is made of steel, even the flowers. How can you love anything in a place like this?

Wow. Totally. Love that the opening line is tied directly to the cover.

Daphne is the half-demon, half-fallen angel daughter of Lucifer and Lilith.

Well that sucks for her! 😉

Life for her is an endless expanse of time, until her brother Obie is kidnapped – and Daphne realizes she may be partially responsible. Determined to find him, Daphne travels from her home in Pandemonium to the vast streets of Earth, where everything is colder and more terrifying.

Wait … so she’s going to earth but we’re going to get a glimpse into the steel world? Or are we not? If she’s leaving home and going to earth, then I’m almost not as interested because with a cover like that, I want the story set in THAT world, not the one that I know. But let’s move on…

Alright, so maybe it’s just me, but I’m lost. This starts off talking about a place that is made all of steel — that is not earth. But it sounds like she’s going to earth and we’re not going to get much if any of her locale. So she’s really on earth? And she’s doing all these things on earth? How then does the human have a hard time being human? If they are in the human world? Um … where exactly is this book set?

This second novel by rising star Brenna Yovanoff is a story of identity, discovery, and a troubled love between two people struggling to find their place both in our world and theirs.

Okay, so it’s dual, that’s fine, but I gotta say, I still don’t really have a clue what it’s about. And I want to learn what it’s about in the blurb, not in someone explaining the blurb (which is what this last line does). So she’s off to find out about her brother and ends up falling in love? Is that the crux of the plot? Find her brother? Yeah … no. I’m still lost.

Where I’d read it
Not sure. I get this is book 2, but shouldn’t I at least be able to understand what it’s telling me? Not sure I’ll be going after this one afterall, but I do say, the cover is bizarrely cool.
